Why did US get such an ugly version of the console?

Simply put, they thought the SFC was too 'soft' and needed more edge for the North American market. Their design also needed to have a better 'modular' design in case they introduced additional hardware to plug into the system in the future. Even the NES had an expansion port, for example.

    Cultural perceptions.

ND: The Super NES design is quite square compared to the Super Famicom. What was your motivation for going in that design direction?
LB: The Super Famicom was maybe okay for the market in Japan. For the US, I felt that it was too soft and had no edge. We were always looking at future modular components (even the NES had a connector on the bottom), so you had to design with the idea of stacking on top of other components. I though the Super Famicom didn't look good when stacked and even by itself, had a kind of "bag of bread" look.

Interesting. I think they were misguided though.

I dont mind the console so much as the controllers, I wish we had the colored buttons on the controller. They even had to change some games to reflect this as well: For example, in Super Mario RPG, when its your turn in battle, your character has the 4 buttons appear above them with the colors representing those buttons - in the Japan (and presumably PAL) versions, the 4 buttons are multicolored while in the NA version of the game, they're two shades of purple.

Naturally, we are stuck with the decisions of the past and it only makes sense for the mini consoles to reflect that.

It's probably just nostalgia, but I think the US version looks better than the other regions.

I agree, especially since the Japanese Super Famicom which was largely the same as the PAL model stacked just fine with the Satellaview.

The worry about a stacking design also doesn't explain the change from coloured buttons to the blandest shades of purple that they could find, and the change of two buttons from convex to concave is just odd (the change itself is probably good, but it should have been on four buttons or none of them).

Yeah, it wouldn't be the same kind of nostalgia if the console looked different to what you remember.

The colored controllers look dumb af. The shape of both consoles are pretty ugly, but I'd much rather have the grey and purple controller over that primary color coded controller.

I didn’t grow up with either, but the US one looks way better to me.
I hope to have provided some rational commentary and/or comedic relief with this post.

Doesn't matter since we can't get either of them at this point (unless you're willing to pay $300 on ebay).

I had no idea the Famicom or Super Famicom existed growing up, so the US versions look "normal" to me.

It was to stop americans from putting soda cans on it.
The video game crash was still very recent so Nintendo was smart to market the NES and SNES as advanced pieces of technology, not kiddie toys. That's why the NES and the SNES look more like VHS players than game machines - no bright skittle buttons on the controller, etc.

Design is subjective, but at least it's its own thing. The PAL SNES was just a copy of the SFC except it runs worse at 50Hz, which is far worse than looking ugly.

I've always liked the U.S. version more. I have a 3rd party controller from back in the day with the multicolor buttons and it was always my least favorite. I only bought it to have the extra controller.

    PAL version is only 50fps.
    Keep the eurotrash.

I'll stay with the superior 60fps USA edition.

As for the overall design, I think both versions have their own individual appeal and I like both (would like to own both, actually)

One thing I will fight about is the controller color scheme. Grey and purple is sexy... The multicolor buttons are lame

I'm a lucky gal that grew up in Sweden, so my parents bought me the PAL Snes when I was like 7.

Still have it up and running to this day! Love it!

I think the North American SNES looks better personally. I like it's appearance.

I think the US SNES looks horrible, it's easily the ugliest successful console out there. PAL/Famicom version look much better. Though Sega's 16-bit system (any version) looks a lot better than those. I think the Genesis/Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast are all very good looking consoles. Sega knew how to make great looking systems.

We got a better SEGA Genesis name too. Mega Drive, bad ass. And the cover art is nearly always better besides a few cases. The American SNES is uglier to me, but it's not THAT bad.

Actually what's with that America ... stop making things ugly. When I first saw how they ruined the SotN cover over there I was horrified.

Would have been nice if they had included one of each type of controller, regardless of region. That way everyone would get the colour they preferred as well as a distinctive second controller.
