How do they fake smoking for TV and the Movies?

Besides smoking herbal cigarettes, they either do not inhale the smoke (that usually causes a coughing attack for anyone not used to it), or simply suck small amounts of smoke into the mouth (exhaling thick smoke from the mouth is pretty telling). Additionally, some the scene is made and cut differently, to minimize the time when actor actively smokes (so that he or she won't look too fake) - you can see them lighting a cig and then talking keeping it in hand and when have to reply to someone shown on the screen they start the cut exhaling a bit of smoke and then replying. You get the idea.

In case you're interested, cigars and pipes pose even less trouble, as you do not inhale when smoking them (and a bit of smoke is hardly harmful if you do this for a short time required to do some shots) and you can give a good impression of smoking just by gently blowing into the pipe to keep the fire and the smoke on. It looks realistic, because even real smokers sometimes do so to avoid lighting the pipe again and it produces a believable puff of smoke.

How Accurate Was the 1943 Disney movie "Education for Death"?

It is somewhat accurate, but not that much. In short - non-German but not Jewish (Yiddish or Hebrew) names were not forbidden in any way but since 1938 officials had the power to reject foreign names when no justification for that choice was provided. Additionally, naming children with specified Jewish names was forbidden for non-Jews but required for Jewish population.

There were rules related to the naming of children, abut they were guidelines describing 'desirable names' rather than 'list of banned names', with an exception for distinctive Semitic names rarely used outside Jewish communities. This 'Germanic' notion stemmed from the national sentiments following restitution of German Empire in 1871 and was heavily strengthened in the Third Reich due to its totalitarian character allowing political agenda to permeate all facets of social life. The Disney movie shows a list that includes mostly typical Jewish names (technically, Biblical ones) in its English spelling with 'Winston' (Churchill) and 'Franklin' (Roosevelt) prominently displayed at the top. And although there is more than grain of truth to the former, the latter is pure fiction

In general, until 1938 there was no such things as 'banned names', as there was no a law strictly forbidding parents from choosing any name for their children, although even prior to the ascent of Hitler, outlandish names were still frowned upon, much like anywhere in Europe. In the German Empire all names of European origin were fair play, as evidenced by the highest-ranking members of Nazi Party whose names were Germanic (Henrich Himmler, Adolf Hitler, Rudolf Hess), Latin (Martin Bormann), Greek (Konstantin von Neurath, Philip Bouhler), Nordic (Hjalmar Schacht, Baldur von Schirach) or Hebrew (Joachim von Ribbentrop, Joseph Goebbels). This changed in 1938, when the the Ministry of the Interior corollary 'Richtlinien über die Führung der Vornamen' (Guidelines for giving first names) of 18 August stated that 'Non-German first names will only be allowed for children of German citizens if a acceptable reason is given (e.g. membership of non-German ethnic group, family customs or family relations'. It should be noted however, that this rule made a specific exception for Romance and Semitic names 'that due to centuries-old tradition are no longer considered foreign in popular opinion (such as Hans, Joachim, Peter, Julius, Elisabeth, Maria, Sofie, Charlotte)'. On the other hand, it excluded Nordic names 'that are unfamiliar and rarely used in Germany (e.g. Björn, Sven, Ragnhild)'. Additionally, special rules covered typical Jewish names. Since 1.1.1939 (date when the rules entered into force), Jews who were German national or stateless persons could name their children only with names listed in an annex (see bottom of this text). Conversely, non-Jews were not allowed to give their children any of such names. Furthermore, all Jews not bearing any of the listed names, had to officially adopt additional name of Israel (for men) or Sara (for Women).

'Second ordinance implementing the rules concerning the change of surnames and given names' from 17th August 1938 adds the requirement to use the 'additional Jewish names' (Israel/Sara) in all official documents, including all legal and trade documents. It also details the punishment for not complying with rules. Willful violation of the last rule was punished by imprisonment up to six months, or to one month if it was considered to be a result of negligence rather than a deliberate obfuscation. Jews who did not comply with the requirement to adopt the additional name (i.e. did not registered it with the their local registrar office within specified time period) were liable to fine or an imprisonment up to one month.

As stated above, Nordic names were not considered 'proper German names'. This most likely created at least a bit of contention (most likely in Schleswig-Holstein, a region neighbouring Denmark) because Director of State Registry Office (Stadesamt), Reinhold Wlochatz addressed this issue in the 10th edition of 'Auswahl gebräuchlicher Vornamen' (lit. 'Selection of usable first names') issued in 1942. He explained that: 'First names that are characteristic for northern Germanic peoples - Danes, Swedes, Norwegians and so on, cannot be considered German first names and are no more desirable than any other foreign names. There is a difference though, when it comes to the names that are used among speakers of Low German inhabiting Frisia, Jutland, Dithmarschen and so on, beacuse Low German and its numerous dialects is no less German than "High German" is' (internal quoting marks as per original).

It may be also interesting that the list of 'desirable Germanic names' presented in many popular 'family books' before 1938 was based on linguistic research, not the actual usage and thus included names that were indeed Germanic in origin although much more common outside Germany such as Ottokar (popular in Hungary) or Ulla (common in Sweden) while among 'names of foreign origin' one could find such popular German names as Anna, Eva, Angela, Grete, Maria, Hans, Johann, Max, Matthias, Michael, Martin, Georg or Klaus (this was addressed by the law as described above). The annex delineating the Jewish names is even more peculiar due to several reason. First, because of the finite form of the inventory of the Jewish names, names absent from said list were not able to be used by German Jews but could be used by non-Jews and this applies to such names as Estera, Abraham, Judit or Rut (the list misses the first one entirely, and contains only Yiddish forms of the latter, to wit 'Avrum', 'Judis' and 'Rause'). Similarly, the list includes a lot of other typically Yiddish names, very rarely used by generally urban Jewish population in Germany, but enjoyed popularity among Polish and Russian Jews, especially the inhabitants of small, predominantly Jewish towns (one theory says that the rule was written with conquest of these territories in mind, another states that it was a general harassment tactic, as in Germany, Yiddish names were considered 'rural' and 'unsophisticated' in comparison with Hebrew equivalents, not to mention 'strange' for most Germans what could further alienate German Jews from their neighbours).

I'm not sure whether it is appropriate to add such an element to the post, but in case someone is interested, I'm including full index of Jewish names considered 'ineligible' for German citizens by the document quoted above. Here it goes (spelling as per German original):

Inventory of Jewish first names

Did the wild west really exist? Was the wild west like in the movies?

Not even a little. Oh, there were exceptions. Billy the kid became famous through the Lincoln County war for example. It was one of the largest of what are called the range wars. Cattle farming had become a huge business. But they competition was fierce, and personal, as these people largely knew one another. So the least scrupulous began hiring men to rustle, steal, cattle from their competition. This led to the cattle farmers hiring men to defend their stock, which led to shootouts and bad blood, which led to more men for defense.

By the end it was devolving into small private armies having small, but notable, battles with each other. But stuff like that is an exception. Most of the grand stories of gunslingers, were in actuality stories of pretty normal criminals, who were caught in pretty normal ways. A gunslinger was rare, and more like a serial killer. They would shoot men in the back, young guys who they were far more experienced than, etc. There is one, maybe two, actual examples of a high noon turn and shoot gunfight, ever.

And bandits, though the kid gang is portrayed as normal, they were not. Cattle rustlers would form a gang, rustle cattle, soon others would realize what was happening, get a couple names of the local yokels who were involve, get a read on roughly where they were hiding in the countryside, get together a possie, go out, find them, kill a couple and arrest the rest, and bring the rest back to town for a show trial and hanging. Hangings were a fairly common form of violence in the old west, but at the time that was true in the cities as well.

More so, really. You see, at the turn of the twentieth century, when the frontier was almost all tamed, an early pop culture of cowboys and gunslingers developed. They were an early form of action movie, relatively cheap to make, that would remain wildly popular for sixty years more. Cheap books, adventure stories, called penny dreadful's because they originally cost a penny, and were quicly and poorly written, emerged. They were very popular. Detectives, pirates, and wars were always popular.

But the western was likely the biggest. Buffalo Bill, as well, helped popularize the myth of the gunslinger. He was a fine trick shot master, who was involved in some fighting of a variety of sorts, I forget now but I think he was also a Civil war veteran, and by the 180's he had created a type of moving show from town to town, involving plays about cowboys, combined with horse and shooting tricks. It was very popular. But the average person in the "old west" is best thought of as a frontiersman. Men and woman trying to scrape a living and get some long term opportunity not available in the city, by starting from scratch as farmers or those who gave services to farmers, in a wilderness.

It was a pretty neat time. Hard, I doubt we would actually enjoy it. But the tenacity of the men and woman who were there, in incredible. A little thing from the popularization of the gunslinger mythos I forgot. Sassperilla. It is a drink you will hear about a lot in old westerns. It was supposed to be cactus juice. I am not even sure if the word is real. But it was an invention of hollywood censorship, especially the forties and fifties tv western. Couldn't have the many kids watching hear whisky. So sasperilla. It may have been a real thing, I am not sure. But it certainly was not sold in taverns, or popular. Its cactus juice. Most people would like water more.

Sarsaparilla was a common ingredient in folk medicine for centuries in central and South America. It was probably made into a beverage for consumption around 1840 and is largely thought to have become commercially available as a soft drink in the late 19th century around 1880. It was definitely a real drink and very popular in the Wild West.

Not even approximately. The big cities of the east had far higher crime and violence rates. Your average Wild West town was about as exciting as watching mud dry.

The popular image that everybody walked around with a six-gun on their hip is simply false. Few people owned pistols, they really weren't that useful, and in most towns, carrying weapons in town limits was illegal.

The iconic Wild West quickdraw duel is entirely a myth. It never happened, not even once. In the entire history of the west, there are 2-3 incidents that kinda-sorta resemble one, but there were other factors that knock them out of the running. The concept was invented by the dime novels of the day, later cemented into the public consciousness by the movies.

Even real cowboys, ie cattle ranch hands, didn't normally carry pistols. Some employers, such as the legendary rancher Charlie Goodnight, forbade his employees from even owning one, he saw them as nothing but trouble waiting to happen. Cowboys out on the range would be issued rifles.

And oddly enough, bank robbery pretty much NEVER happened. In the entire history of the west, there are credible reports of maybe 4-5 bank robberies. Bandits preferred to stick up stagecoaches and trains far from town.

The myth of the Wild West was created first by the dime novels. Then faux Wild West shows like Buffalo Bill's advanced the myth.

And then there was "the toughest town in the wild west," Palisade, Nevada...

In the late 1870s, the people of Palisade decided they wanted to give the eastern dandies passing through on the railroad a little thrill. So they started staging gunfights when the trains stopped in town. It started out with just a single quickdraw pistol duel, but eventually it turned into a veritable wild west Disneyland, with staged bank robberies, Indian raids fought off by US Cavalry, all the WW cliches. And everybody in the area was in on it, the townsfolk, the Army, the Indians, the railroads,...

About 30-40 years later when people started making movies, that cemented the myth of the WW forever.

No, while there where a hand full of duels, there where no master gun slingers, in real life the old duel at high noon just ends with both men getting killed. Fighting was mostly limited to fistfights and brawls, beyond then we have murderers by gun, blade and hand not duels but murderers people shooting each other in the back.

Even a range war would involve mostly one party shooting at the other in the back by surprise. The bank, train and stagecoach robbery where rare, stick up the bank and every one know who to look for, when it was and the horse you rode in on. But bushwhacking, cattle rustleing, barn burning, and murdering farmers that was crime happening in remote places where it could go unreported for days, even weeks.

Most towns had strict gun control laws- no guns in town.

There were no "high noon duels". Sometimes people were murdered outside of town, typically over cattle rustling- so easy and profitable, so they weren't nice when caught red-handed. People "caught" might shoot a witness if there's no one else around. Eventually erupted into larger range wars.

Many cowboys were black, also Mexican vaqueros

Only a handful of bank heists ever

The term 'Wild West' was initially referring to the fact that the area was 'wild', i.e. sparsely populated and uncultivated, not that it was particularly lawless or dangerous.

As others already wrote, basically everything you see in western is a fabrication of the entertainment industry that used popular adventure tropes and used them in the Wild West millieu. There were no 'duels at high noon' (both parties would be immediately arrested by a resident sheriff and quite possibly hanged for a murder attempt). It is hotly debated, whether the crime by itself was more dangerous than relative lack of power structures, allowing unscrupulous businessmen to gain wealth and influence in blatantly illegal way (especially at the expense of the newcomers with little connections), with the Lincoln County War being a prime example of the problem.

Of course, crime was not unusual but it was usually committed far away from cities. If anything, gangs were rustling cattle or robbing travelling merchants (one of the most infamous robberies happened in Skeleton Canyon in 1881, where caravan carrying Mexican silver has been ambushed, resulting in roughly 12 dead) but this event, much like the shootout at the OK Corral is so popular precisely because it was so rare. In other words, crime was not unheard of, but the crime rate in frontier cities was rather low in comparison with densely-populated cities of that era.

Honestly, feminists.

It's an incredibly stupid double standard because men have and will always objectify women to some extent regardless of body shape and a lot of dudes prefer small boobs, buuuuuut the general societal standards seems to be if you're a chick with big boobs and show these big boobs in any remotely revealing way, you are basically just there "for your boobs" and get taken less seriously as an actress, women "slut shame" you for "using your body" to get a role, etc.

It's really f***ing stupid, but nearly every busty actress has addressed it and a lot of Hollywood movies seem to go out of their way to not cast busty chicks unless it's a movie like Baywatch or Transformers where the chicks are explicit fan service.

It's really funny because I think other women have put other women on a pedestal for having big boobs more than men have. It's one of those things where other women get salty if another chick has more curves than them because a flat chick can wear a low cut shirt and booty shorts and it's no biggie, but God forbid a chick with a big rack actually show it in any remotely revealing manner.
Sanity is a one trick pony, all you get with it is rational thought, but with crazy the sky's the limit.

It's not so much something against large breasts, as much as large breasts aren't really important to a casting decision anymore.

Modern feminists hate sexy women with big boobs cause they are often ugly, have tiny or small boobs, and feel a woman with big boobs only has sexual talent not acting talent.

People need to fight the SJWs and this PC Bs that here, it is only making things bad not making anything better. The sooner it dies the better, women who look sexy and have a large bust size are a good thing.

Women with great bodies can act, and big busty women who can act need to fight the modern feminists who are shaming them.

Actually, you might have a point. Minorities, Black men seem to value a giant ass, while White males seem to value breasts. Especially in Brasil, where playboy models only show the ass. Moreover, almost every Niki Minaj video hyper-displays her ass jiggle, and she twerks on stage. In America, the ass was not as much a coveted feature until Sir-Mix-A-Lot made it front and center. This, followed by early 90s pop culture booty jokes, and eventually twerking around 2000.

Breasts, and the entire package, were evident of the "full-picture" centerfold through the trashy "sex-trap" 80s. Now, mainstream media values "thickness," "booty shorts," and "Truffle Butter." I dare you to look that last one up on google. It's quite the treat. ;).

I personally prefer boobs over ass. I do not understand the obsession with glutes.

Also, read this section from SMAL's "Baby Got Back." This will answer TC's question:

"I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back"

In addition to this, the video starts off with two "typical" white chicks talking down to a black woman; the white girls not only call her a prostitute, but also use "black" as a pejorative. Here, SMAL mocks white-conservative culture, and projects his view of what whites in general think about black females. So, it isn't that breasts aren't more popular, it's that SJW culture has projected a fear into mainstream thinking that NOT liking glutes is racist.

Actually there might be a bigger picture to look at.

1. Breast Health Issues
Big Breasts cause back problems. Scarlet Johansen is on record for getting a breast reduction because she felt she was having problems. This has stopped no one from saying she's hot still.

2. Hollywood, and Sex in General
Yes, ideas have changed on what the the popular idea of what makes a beautiful women, but so have the way we treat women in Hollywood from casting couch to the directors. While I will say it's not equality, its something closer then it was. Which isn't counting B movies, but they seem to have a smaller pool of ladies to choose from. The bigger issue in regards to this topic is, alot of actresses are advising against roles that get you known more for you body then your skill, and that seems to be something alot of new actresses are taken to heart.

3. Stigmatism on Sexuality
This hits on several different levels. The main one being sex doesn't sale as much as use to in the modern world since there is so many other places to get it. The other is there is so many markets that will outright ban product for various reasons.

4. Outside of Porn Breast Implants are borderline Taboo
You would think we'd be over this by now since most people don't care, but between health issues related to breast implants, body shaming, or just the cost in general. Still that easily loops back to point 1.

I'm also curious to hear what the average career span is for a big boob actress, and how long she was able to stay at her highest level. Dolly Parton might end up being the biggest name on the list, but certainly not the average career.

Numbers 2 and 3 tiptoe around the race issue, and number 3 does not take into account that many hot black actresses are hired solely because of their butts. Beyonce/Minaj wouldn't have careers without their "thickness" and their butts. This is no different than hiring a woman for breasts, except that "thickness" is an exclusive trait of Black Culture. No Whites apply.

Number 1 goes without saying, but many women also get butt reductions because of enlarged glutes. In addition, a woman hired because of her ass, is more likely to get glute implants. I've heard rumors that Minaj did.

Finally, with Number 4, today yes because Breasts aren't as valuable. But why this happened isn't being addressed. SJWs are against sexuality, unless it deconstructs a president set by Whites. Butts over Breasts is the perfect deconstruction. Islam over Christianity fits, too. Good ol' Derrida is to blame for all of this. *smh*

I will always hate words like the bolded. One culture calls it one thing, another culture calls it another, but somehow that makes it exclusive to the point of it only being acceptable for one culture that when another culture does it it's ignorant and wrong regardless of how well they do it...yeah no. Twerking isn't racially, or even culturally exclusive. The whole thing seems like its an evolved form of a lapdance. Which is all the more weird that people are teaching there babies(yes the diaper change variety) to twerk, or maybe thats just how easy it is. *shrug*

*shrug*

Oh yes twerking is racially exclusive. The whole point is to promote and amplify the idea of black sex appeal. You may hate the truth, but you don't exactly have a counterargument.

Wtf are y'all crazy? I saw this topic and saw the first response which is the correct response and thought folks were going to prove him wring by posting all the large breasted actresses working. Then it turned into people actually thinking Hollywood hated big breasts. Gtfo with this lol.

It isn't that they hate breasts, it's that they hate the image set by the precedent of white sexuality.

Are you black or something? I'm black and I am a breast man. And tons of white guys love asses and always have. Not to mention, there are tons of white women throughout history who have been famous in black porn for having big asses. Look, the whole twerking thing and why it annoyed black people in the media is because Miley Cyrus and her flat butt and sub-par moves was hailed as inventing twerking and the queen of it by white media for some reason. When twerking has been around and even in the media for decades by black models. It was silly, white people realized that and I thought we moved on. Now you are acting like black people only care about butts and I guess liberal hollywood catering to that hate on breasts because that's "white" is absurd.

And on top of alll of that, there are STILL tons of actresses with big breasts working in hollywood! God damn y'all are crazy.

I'm actually white and I am critiquing the SJW context of Hollywood sexuality. I'm center-right, christian.

Agreed. Thread is no more than another "SJW-feminism is the devil" party. Boobs will never go away.

Not sure what this topic is referring to exactly, but I suspect the perception might have something to do with the most popular female actresses training their bodies to be more lithe and athletic so they can better play action roles. Having a curvy Charlize Theron running around the wasteland in Mad Max isn't as convincing.

The use of Theron doesn't work considering she's never been curvy in the least. ScarJo works, however. She used to be hot; now she looks like a lesbian, and a real world one, not a movie hot one like in Mulholland Dr and what have you.

This is very true. Its like the breast reduction caused a complete psychic change in her personality. Then she does that all female cast movie recently. Hmmm

Yeah, her personality now is very unlikeable. Doesn't she understand that her popularity came from men now she seems determined to turn off as many as she can? Women still don't like her based on the failure of Rough Night. Without Marvel, she'd have nothing.

"Their" is correct. As in "Dear God their [parents must be siblings]"
  1. Boards
  2. Movies: At the Theater
  3. Why does Hollywood hate large breasts these days?
