Am I right in thinking the article is just conservative virtue signaling with no real purpose but to further drive a wedge between the multiple politically-based cultures of our country?

That's the sense that I get from the headline at least. It usually doesn't motivate me that much to read an article that "pre-opens" up with an attack on my political beliefs.

I mean, sure. But who cares about either sides opinion when it basically comes with so much bias?
It’s one thing to police your own language and a very different one to police other people’s.

Liberals can act as if they’re not so certain — and maybe actually not be so certain — that bigotry motivates people who disagree with them on issues like immigration. Without sacrificing their principles, liberals can come across as more respectful of others. Self-righteousness is rarely attractive, and even more rarely rewarded.

Liberals are trapped in a self-reinforcing cycle. When they use their positions in American culture to lecture, judge and disdain, they push more people into an opposing coalition that liberals are increasingly prone to think of as deplorable. That only validates their own worst prejudices about the other America.

Every one of those points can be launched right back at the conservative mindset. They project too hard for any sort of criticism levied at others to be truly meaningful.

"Well said" would imply it says anything other than "Liberals don't agree with me so I'm going to say they're wrong". This guy took generic complaints about people of a certain political mindset and prettied them up with longer polysyllabic words without attempting to actually get into any of the issues.

It's hard to take someone seriously when they try to seriously and unironically use words like "Conservatives" and "Liberals" in opinion pieces like this. That to me is the ultimate indicator that what they're about to say amounts to some of the most sensationalized, exaggerated and generalized viewpoints on the planet.

I find it to be simplistic, manipulative and sometimes (like in cases like this) downright dangerous regardless of which side is doing it.

Liberals think they’re smarter than conservatives but they always go to the “conservatives do that too!” line when their partisanship and tribal mentality is made apparent. If they were actually emotionally intelligent they would own up to the faults of their own party and try to fix them instead of constantly strawmanning how dumb conservatives are. But I don’t see that happening, precisely because they aren’t all that intelligent

I did and I want my two minutes back. It isn't saying anything profound. I've met smug conservatives too. I don't disagree it's a stereotype that liberals can have a holier than thou attitude.

To claim it drives people to the other side though implies those people are making emotional judgements irrespective of the facts, and possibly, against one's best interests.

It's saying, "you might be right, but I don't like you as a person, so I'm going to be your antithesis, for better or for worse."

The Admiral posted...

It's also a two-way street. I often get conservatives on this board ignoring when I advocate for a more moderate position, when they're interested in just citing the most extreme and outlandish examples of liberal thought. It's also frustrating when certain issues that shouldn't be controversial are. These usually tend to be scientific topics. But if I advocate for certain scientific findings, I'll be lumped into the category of smug liberal and also presumed to have certain beliefs about social or economic policies that I might be more sympathetic to the debate than I'd be given credit for.

So ehhh, forgive me if I think this is a juvenile opinion piece.

The flip side of this is that the writer is only admonishing us about this because she is aware of our standards and knows modern conservatives are ideologically bankrupt beyond simple opposition, despite their controlling every branch of government.

That's why we're harder on liberalism with it's weak PR than we are on conservative hypocrisy, corruption, kleptocracy, lack of empathy, willful ignorance, racism, etc. We have expectations for one side we no longer have for the other.

Personally, I think he's wrong. Someone who would throw a vote in protest clearly values their feelings over the issues apparently at stake in the vote, something fundamentally irrational, or they don't know, in which case they are (often willfully) ignorant. The article thinks we need to handle these individuals with kids gloves instead of chastising them for being childish and holding them to literally any standard. It's appeasement. If the 20th century has taught us anything about appeasement, it's that it doesn't work.

    This article summarized IMO:

Some liberals treat people who disagree with them as inferiors. This matters because many of these liberals are celebrities or have influential positions and their words and opinions are heard by and matter to a lot of people.

The problem is that this "holier than thou" attitude is very off-putting, and no matter how many times you shout "racist!" you're not going to get anyone on your side. In fact, you'll only drive people away. Among other things, this will lead to Donald Trump's reelection in 2020.

The flipside being, a reality TV star devaluing the office of the president with scandals, drama, gross conflicts of interest, and unprofessionalism can also lose the reelection because the idea of "take that liberals, stop being so smug" isn't as bullet proof as it seems.

DT won under the premise of being anti-establishment because of a frustration with the status quo. Those swing voters amenable to voting either way aren't necessarily his base who blindly follow dear leader. They saw that going against status quo doesn't necessarily mean better. He lost the popular vote after all. His victory isn't so much a chastisement of liberal smugness. If he wins 2020, it'll only be if the democrats double down on 2016 strategy.

Who said that conservatives don't also act superior or people in general don't also act superior regardless of politics?

This article is about liberals. It talks about how liberals think of all Trump supports as bigots, about the recent "racist!" namecalling trend, and about other things that liberals do which are offputting to people. Overall, it talks about how this attitude will get Trump reelected.

The main argument in this topic is "conservatives do it too". That's not an argument. If anything it just shows that what he's saying is correct but incomplete.

    More or less.

I'm also saying that refusing to acknowledge the fact that a flaw your pointing out in the "other side" is also a big flaw with your own side kinda limits the value of whatever point you're attempting to make.

If the article had been about how this flaw is harmful and perpetuated by both sides (cause it is) it'd be a much more intelligent and worthwhile article. An article which chooses to apply something solely to the side they don't support when it clearly does affect both sides is just crap journalism.

what... the second paragraph is not separate from the first paragraph.

The problem is that this "holier than thou" attitude that these liberals have is very off-putting, and no matter how many times they shout "racist!" they're not going to get anyone on their side. In fact, they'll only drive people away. Among other things, this will lead to Donald Trump's reelection in 2020.

    Is that better?

But see, I think this is completely ridiculous. If times in the states were as dire as you're claiming, we'd see far more demonstrations from "both sides" that'd result in violence and death. As hyperbolic as the right can get about Berkeley and likewise with the left about Charlottesville, there's a reason why these events resonate like they do. It's because they are so few and far between that they really aren't the norm. That isn't downplaying the violence at these events, and we as a society should condemn those responsible for the violence, but the reason these events are repeatedly referenced is because they are the outlier and not the norm.

Basically when we start seeing riots on a weekly basis, I'll get concerned.

Hard not to read this segment in 2018 and think "yeah, that's basically all correct."
This attitude comes in the form of four major narratives about who conservatives are and how they think and function.

The first is the "vast right-wing conspiracy," a narrative made famous by Hillary Rodham Clinton but hardly limited to her. This vision maintains that conservatives win elections and policy debates not because they triumph in the open battle of ideas but because they deploy brilliant and sinister campaign tactics. A dense network of professional political strategists such as Karl Rove, think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation and industry groups allegedly manipulate information and mislead the public. Democratic strategist Rob Stein crafted a celebrated PowerPoint presentation during George W. Bush's presidency that traced conservative success to such organizational factors.

This liberal vision emphasizes the dissemination of ideologically driven views from sympathetic media such as the Fox News Channel. For example, Chris Mooney's book "The Republican War on Science" argues that policy debates in the scientific arena are distorted by conservatives who disregard evidence and reflect the biases of industry-backed Republican politicians or of evangelicals aimlessly shielding the world from modernity. In this interpretation, conservative arguments are invariably false and deployed only cynically. Evidence of the costs of cap-and-trade carbon rationing is waved away as corporate propaganda; arguments against health-care reform are written off as hype orchestrated by insurance companies.

This worldview was on display in the popular liberal reaction to the Supreme Court's recent ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. Rather than engage in a discussion about the complexities of free speech in politics, liberals have largely argued that the decision will "open the floodgates for special interests" to influence American elections, as the president warned in his State of the Union address. In other words, it was all part of the conspiracy to support conservative candidates for their nefarious, self-serving ends.

It follows that the thinkers, politicians and citizens who advance conservative ideas must be dupes, quacks or hired guns selling stories they know to be a sham.
      ...
But, if conservative leaders are crass manipulators, then the rank-and-file Americans who support them must be manipulated at best, or stupid at worst. This is the second variety of liberal condescension, exemplified in Thomas Frank's best-selling 2004 book, "What's the Matter With Kansas?" Frank argued that working-class voters were so distracted by issues such as abortion that they were induced into voting against their own economic interests. Then-Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, later chairman of the Democratic National Committee, echoed that theme in his 2004 presidential run, when he said Republicans had succeeded in getting Southern whites to focus on "guns, God and gays" instead of economic redistribution.

The third version of liberal condescension points to something more sinister. In his 2008 book, "Nixonland," progressive writer Rick Perlstein argued that Richard Nixon created an enduring Republican strategy of mobilizing the ethnic and other resentments of some Americans against others. Similarly, in their 1992 book, "Chain Reaction," Thomas Byrne Edsall and Mary D. Edsall argued that Nixon and Reagan talked up crime control, low taxes and welfare reform to cloak racial animus and help make it mainstream. It is now an article of faith among many liberals that Republicans win elections because they tap into white prejudice against blacks and immigrants.

      :o
Liberals are smart the way Sheldon on Big Bang Theory is Smart: a lot of book learnin' but utterly clueless on human interactions and unconcerned with any emotions but their own. They've become the type of people that say "yes that dress make you look fat" and legitimately wonder why they're sleeping on the couch. Hell, this tread shows the lack of emotional age by not denying what is said, but trying for the "the other kids are bad too" defense I haven't heard since the playground to excuse what they do.

And the worst part is, I think they enjoy it more than getting what they say they want. I mean, if this was successful in actually changing minds and opinions I could deal, but instead we got Trump and seem to have firmly entrenched the alt-right into place. Guess our brilliant method of changing the world flopped yet somehow, if we treat people even worse, the voting will be different this time?

I used to consider myself far left, but being on the receiving end of harsh social justice condemnation made me realize I'd been being unfair. My views haven't changed, but I couldn't see the opposing side as evil anymore. My political side needs a refresher in persuasion. From How to win friends and influence people:

      Don't criticize, condemn, or complain.
      Give honest and sincere appreciation
Arouse in the other person an eager want. (give them a reason to want it better than to not be a nazi)
Show respect for the other person's opinions. Never say "You're wrong."
Let the other person feel the idea is his or hers.
Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view.
Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires.
Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
Let the other person save face
      Praise every improvement
Make the other person happy about doing what you suggest

I see very little of that from either side, but I guess I expect my own group of smart people not to find excuses to sink to the depths of their enemies.

Political discourse when disingenuous is responded with trolling. That's been the name of the game of the internet since forever. suggestions from How to win friends and influence people

      Give honest and sincere appreciation
Show respect for the other person's opinions. Never say "You're wrong."
Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view.
Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires.
Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
Let the other person save face
      Praise every improvement

Those are the ones I like/agree with. The other ones seem dishonest IMO.

      Smugness right here

is it smug to feel on the right side of history?

Yes, I think it's really smug.

You're basically saying that your opinion will forever be known as correct and disagreeing opinions will forever be known as wrong.

Then why didn't he say "I think I'm right as a liberal"

"On the right side of history" literally means that future generations will remember you as being correct.

"On the right right of history" means something. A guy who volunteers a few hours a month to help homeless people is doing something good, but he's not on the right or wrong side of history.

Hell, this tread shows the lack of emotional age by not denying what is said, but trying for the "the other kids are bad too" defense I haven't heard since the playground to excuse what they do.

Or you're bad at teasing out facetiousness on the internet. Do you honestly expect people to respond earnestly to a thread starting off with a premise as inflammatory as OP?

Political discourse when disingenuous is responded with trolling. That's been the name of the game of the internet since forever. I don't have to point out the irony in conservatives linking an opinion piece about the condescending nature of liberals. It's...well, condescending. Anyone with an iota of intelligence isn't going to fall for these stupid ass generalizations, but the signal gets lost in the noise. Hence the jokes.

The fallacy in your post is that the premise is founded upon the idea that the liberals here are trolling.

      1. They aren't self aware enough to do so.
      2. They honestly believe everything they're saying.
      3. Liberals even if they were capable of trolling would be infighting so much about the purity of their troll attempts that they would never even get around to addressing the conservatives here.
