What happened?

pewdiepie is one of the big reasons for the adpocalypse on youtube (they basically granted advertisers the ability to opt out of videos that fall into vague and broadly definable categories such as "sensitive social issues" or "sensational and shocking"). A lot of youtubers they just straight up demonetized.

So whenever Pewdiepie slips up the whole internet jumps on his ass (he used the n word in one of his recent streams). But nothing happens to him because he's one of the youtube juggernauts lol.

I can see why people would get offended over it, but intent and context is important. It was stupid, but like I said, he obviously just blurted out a random insult and didn't intend to say it in a racist way or make any racist remarks toward anyone. He just let a s***ty word slip while mad at a game.

The retaliation against people who use the word is worse than the actual use of the word, though. The retaliation appears to be rather hateful, whereas the instances of it's usage that they are attacking are not fueled by hate at all. There is certainly far more conscious and directed vitriol at PDP than PDP put into that word (Which was excited frustration rather than conscious racial hatred). People love to hate and find things to hate. PDP is famous, divisive, successful, and enviable. The "N-word" is a perfect thing for people to feel self-righteous about without any need for vigorous thought or analysis. Thus, hating on PDP for accidentally saying theb"N-word" scratches that itch for in-group hate without any internalized risk of feeling ashamed or guilty later. It's predictable and widespread, but that does not mean it is logical or consistent with our perception of language in general.

How do you arbitrarily define someone as being "oversensitive"? Just having a reaction? See, when you're intentionally vague and do a s***ty job of mitigating an issue you look pretty ignorant. Why can't you just say that some people didn't have a problem with the subject matter, or people got over it (especially after his apology)?

Because when you phrase your statement like that, you do not look remotely intelligent, and you're brushing off an issue and making it seem smaller than what it is to some people. Nearly any reaction (short of something like wanting him to die or something) is not overreacting to him using debatably the worst racial slur you can call someone that had been used for centuries and is still to this day used by people to s*** on others for just living their life.

@ModLogic If that's in response to me, the last person I need telling me that is some habitual s***poster (from video games to politics) who says it's "overreacting" to have any reaction to someone referring to you as a racial slur that has HUNDREDS of years of negative connotations from being spit on and hated on, to flat out being killed and denied privileges merely for looking a certain way.

@fenderbender321 No, some people use it because it is an accurate description. I don't think I'm high and mighty or anything like that. Tell me where the intelligence lies in calling someone a hateful slur that has as many negative connotations as the n word, and why people should use it regularly, then I will concede. Otherwise, you can shut the hell up with that bs and what I said was accurate. The fact that you even imply that just speaks to the amount of ignorance I was talking about.

Furthermore, I sure as all hell don't need you to tell me how "intelligent" I am. I'm graduating with a high GPA this year in Chemistry (not an easy degree) in a competitive university, I made in the 96 percentile on the MCAT, and I've tutored people in subjects ranging from Physiology and History to Writing, so thanks, but no thanks on the need for recognition from some random ass gamefaqs user. You're the one who brought intelligence into the discussion, not me. But since we're measuring dicks right now (mine is 7 inches, BTW), I not only have a bachelor's degree, but years and years of work and life experience as well. Also, I've banged liked 35 girls...mostly without a condom. What's that got to do with anything? Nothing. Just thought I'd brag.

And yeah, you like to label people because it makes everything black and white for you. You don't want to take the time to consider things or judge posts individually, you just want to lend yourself instant credibility in the argument by playing the "you're obviously stupid if _______" card.

@fenderbender321 No, some people use it because it is an accurate description. I don't think I'm high and mighty or anything like that. Tell me where the intelligence lies in calling someone a hateful slur that has as many negative connotations as the n word, and why people should use it regularly, then I will concede.

It's not about dick measuring, I'm just saying you're the last person I need to verify my intelligence. And no offense, but years and years of experience doesn't mean you have the capacity to be a doctor, nor does it speak to your actual intelligence (esp without knowing the degree). According to the tests I have the intelligence locked down and as well as having proven other degrees of aptitude at the very least considering I have an interview next month for it. And interesting how you didn't bother mentioning what degree that was, but I guess that's another story. I also have you tagged as "gay" as I tag a lot of people who have openly admitted to it or something else, so I'm not sure if I should really believe any of what you claim. At the very least I can verify my MCAT score as I have been keeping a running tab of my progress on another board here (since I know a few of the users more closely).

I brought up intelligence for the exact reason I extrapolated upon above.

I find it funny you didn't even bother answering, which proves my point there. It has nothing with labeling someone black or white. You made an ignorant post, and I called you out for it. I confronted you and thoroughly explained my reasoning, then you used poor reasoning to explain yourself then you backed down. Far from indicative of "low intelligence" on my side when I actually responded to you, while you didn't respond in full to me, and your position is that of supporting someone who brushed away the use of such an awful word. I am 100% justified in saying that it is indicative of low intelligence to brush off such a repugnant word, especially when you can't justify the inverse.

Of course the kiddies who think that saying the n-word is totally cool are completely against a non-insult like "cracker." Conservative snowflakes just being their usual selves.

Who in this topic was getting upset over him saying "cracker"? You're complaining about something that's not happening.

    Terra-enforcer posted...

I knew there were plenty of dumbasses on CE, but this many in one topic? Gotta be some kind of record, right?

It's one thing to say you were okay with the situation. It's another to say "derp just a word." The latter is legitimately f***ing ignorant as hell if you do not grasp the very rudimentary connotations of such a negative word. Just because it's a word doesn't mean it has no meaning.

Why? It is just a word. If you get super offended by particular words, that's your right to do so but it doesn't make them anything more than just words. Yes, its a word with a meaning, a pretty s***ty, nasty meaning, but its still a word at the end of the day. A word which wasn't even used in the worst context or with the worst intent it could be.

    Terra-enforcer posted...
How do you arbitrarily define someone as being "oversensitive"?

Because when you phrase your statement like that, you do not look remotely intelligent, and you're brushing off an issue and making it seem smaller than what it is to some people. Nearly any reaction (short of something like wanting him to die or something) is not overreacting to him using debatably the worst racial slur you can call someone that had been used for centuries and is still to this day used by people to s*** on others for just living their life.

If some dude you've never met calls some other dude you've never met a s***ty racist word in a non racist context in a moment of frustration during a video game, then immediately catches himself and apologizes, later making a whole apology video, and your reaction is anything other than "oh okay", then I'd totally say you're overreacting. Of course, that's just my opinion. I mean seriously, who gives a s***? Getting mad over stupid s*** like this is a such a waste of your own time.

If all that matters overall is youtube views.

his video has 1mil views idk how much money that is but i think its a lot

There's not really any way to calculate it. Different creators get more or less money per views depending on algorithm related factors and the ads are ultimately the key. If you have ad block they get no money for your view, if as soon as the 5 second skip ad counter comes up you hit it then you get no money for that view, unless you put ads in the video like those timed banners and such, but even then iirc you have to get a click for it to actually matter.
That's why most big YouTubers have ads within the video like sponsorships and such.
One person can have a video with 2 million views and another person have one with 1 million and they could have made more money on it than the first person.

Regardless the dude is making bank, a few years ago he had made 15 million that year alone.

Doesn't make them more than words and getting mad at Pewdiepie for saying it the way he did is stupid. If you wanna get mad at an a****** who's genuinely racist and saying racist s***, sure, but Pewdiepie saying it the way he did? Really? Who cares.

"N*****" is put on a pedestal by a lot of people anyway. Out of curiosity, are there any other words you hold to this regard, maybe other racial slurs or insults? What if you didn't but someone else did, would you never say it in any context and feel like you've committed a horrible act if you let it slip and didn't mean it?

@LJRENEGADE If the word had as much history and instantly negative meaning as that word, of course I wouldn't use it because I'm not an a******. And the race topic is VERY relevant. I love how you think you can deem what is "stupid" or imply I'm immature for calling out the flaws in your logic while you continue to make blatantly ignorant remarks. You being white is relevant because that just goes to show I was right about you being too above empathy and you're too set in your own ways to give a damn about how the people legitimately affected by this feel. It's like a rich person not seeing the issue in people spitting on poor people. This is all also still ignoring the fact that, you know, some people who directly dealt with people legitimately spitting on and attacking them for being a certain race are still alive. I have a grandfather who had part of his ear cut off, and was attacked multiple times by people who called him that word. When he heard that word given a certain context, he had to act a certain way, or get off the side of the street because someone else was walking there who happened to be white. That is literally what you can consider to be traumatizing experiences he experienced over DECADES. But sure, he's supposed to laugh it up when he hears that word, right? This is what I mean when I say you are ignorant, because you are. Of course you wouldn't know or car ehow it feels.

And let me ask you a question (pretty sure I already did but you ignored it), why use that word specifically instead of another word? If you know the negative connotations of the word, why link yourself to people who use it to literally attack others or to demean them due to a deep sense of hatred? The white cloak and hats the KKK wear are just clothes. They may stand for hate and are used by the members to announce to the world that they hate certain races of people, but they're just clothing. So is it fine for anyone to just put on a Klan outfit and call it a day? I'm just supposed to assume that there's no chance of them being racist and there's no problem with doing that? Your logic is beyond asinine, and this speaks volumes as to why. You don't intentionally link yourself with a hate group like that if you truly mean to be not racist.

As for saying you don't care if he doesn't care, that's literally my point. If I apologize to someone whilst laughing then following up by saying I really don't care, then I'm not at all sorry. YOU were the one to bring his apology up, and now you're backtracking heavy by saying it doesn't matter. Pick a side, did he apologize, or is he just being an inconsiderate ass who doesn't care?

And what do you even mean by "wasting time"? You being in a discussion like this is in no way any better. You act as if the people complaining are some activists who spend hundreds of hours researching and yelling at a screen. Making a complaint, or saying "I disagree with him" takes a few minutes max, so that logic makes very little sense. Especially coming from a guy posting on a political board of a video game message board at that.

But this is all again me knowing I shouldn't have confronted you after you admitted to being white. It's more often than not a waste of time arguing with someone like you who thinks it's "just a word." Looks like I was correct in saying you were not bright. I'm not merely saying this out of anger (I'm not even angry) or spite. I'm saying it because it is applicable to this situation. You are being intentionally ignorant, intentionally disregarding the feelings of those who it actually affects (like the rich man who doesn't give a damn about the poor which is pretty unintelligent in itself), and your logic is filled with a plethora of holes throughout your poor defense. Then you continue to make points whilst backtracking, and focusing on nitpicking the smaller parts of my post as for just confronting the main question at hand. None of those are qualities of anyone I'd consider to be intelligent.

You being white is ... this feel.
What does being white have to do with being able to have empathy lol. And its funny you talk about showing empathy in a situation like this. Pewdiepie clearly said the word in a non racist context and just accidentally blurted it out, apologizing twice after. I'm saying who cares, he clearly didn't mean it in a racist context and you're the one who's saying its not ok, context doesn't matter, people are justified in being pissed at him. I would say you lack empathy for him.

      It's like a rich...
Oh, is being black = to being poor and being white = to being rich now? And if the issue is a word, then I gotta be honest and say I don't care. Hearing a word isn't the end of the world.

This is all also still ignoring ...
I feel sorry for your grandfather, no one should have to experience that. But you can't link his experiences to this Pewdiepie situation or any time the word is used, regardless of context. That's a little ridiculous yeah?

A lot of words have history and can be traumatizing to people and that's unfortunate, but it doesn't make them more than words. And even for an offensive word, n***** is held on such a high pedestal, even compared to other words that could be offensive to people. Like would you hold f****t in the same regard as n*****? The sad thing is, putting it on a pedestal is giving the word more power than it deserves.

(you ignored it), why use that word...
Because your question didn't really change anything. You said if n***** is just a word, why not use it out of all the other billions of words? Because if its just a word, its a part of all the other billions of words and is fair game like the rest.

If you know the negative connotations...
And a single word can't link you to a group without context and context is important. Every time some little kid calls someone a f****** on Xbox, are they linking themselves to Isis?

And as far as wearing a Klan outfit, intent is important. Pewdiepie clearly didn't mean to be racist when he said n******.

      As for ...
What I'm saying is, he was clearly like "whoops sorry, my bad". He just didn't go out of his way to go "oh my god I'm so sorry, that was so horrible of me" because it wasn't that big of a deal. He was considerate enough to apologize because he knew what he said could offend people, but didn't make a bigger deal of it than that because it wasn't one. That's what I was saying.

And what do you even mean by ...
Spending any of your time getting yourself in a pissy mood about it is a waste of time. I'm on here too, but I'm not getting upset about it. That is the part that's a waste of your time. No point in getting upset over it.

But this is all again me knowing I shouldn't have confronted you after you admitted to being white.
White people lack empathy and can never be victims of anything or hateful words, right?

Looks like I was correct in saying you were not bright.
Have I insulted you once? Because you've insulted me several times now.

feelings of those who it actually affects
Uh, how would it affect you more than me? The word was used in a non racist context and it wasn't directed at you or me. How does that affect anyone any differently? You don't even know the guy and weren't part of the conversation. This doesn't affect you or anyone else at all. That's my whole point. Being butthurt over it is stupid.

Like, this is all over some dude neither of us will ever meet threw out a s***ty word, then apologized after, clearly not meaning to offend anyone. Is this really a big deal to you?

I have stated multiple times I don't have a problem with him anymore, so you're directing that to the wrong person. I'm solely arguing that those who were upset initially are justified. I already said an apology loses all meaning if you say it whilst laughing then later saying you don't even care, so bringing that again is a flawed point.

You being white means you aren't in the position to speak for an entire group of people you have zero connection with. I can say "who cares" about the "Dreamers" being forced out of the US, but from a moral position I am inept as I don't know what that group is going through. So it would be incredibly ignorant of me to state that it's impossible for anyone to feel sympathy for that group of people.

I was blessed to be far from poor because of my parents as a child, and now if everything goes according to plan, I already have interviews set up to be a doctor, so obviously that's not the case. The point should have been incredibly blatant. In my example, the rich person was in a much higher position and never experienced poverty, so it's no surprise if he doesn't give a damn about whatever affects poor people while he gets a pass. It's sure easy as hell to talk behind a computer with your privilege (again I'm not an SJW so I hate using that word, but here it is 100% appropriate) versus facing these things in real life.

Not ridiculous, no. My point is that the "n word" has much more negative connotations with some people, so it's only respectful to say "you know, you went through some s***, so instead of me, a person with all of my privilege who has been given a nice life and don't know s*** about how it feels for someone to use that as a way to demean you, why don't I just say maybe you are justified in not liking such a terrible word."

And again, I said this before which you ignored, give me another word with as many CENTURIES of negative connotations as that one and used so aggressively to kill thousands and enslave millions (and still used as a word of hatred to this very day), and then you may have a point, otherwise you sound very ignorant. Ever think there could be a reason why it's on a "pedestal"? Well, you are clearly ignorant to the fact, but there is one, and it is very clear.

So it's fine to wear a Klan outfit if you claim to "not be racist"? That logic is incredibly asinine. Even more so because you keep saying "Pewdiepie thinks this," when last time I checked, you are NOT him, so you're making baseless assumptions.

He LAUGHED and said IT DOESN'T MATTER. What the hell about any of this says "whoops"? Again, it just means "whoops I got caught" but "I don't give a damn." Any apology or any "oops" is instantly negated the moment that happens. Period. There's not even any debating this.

And again, you also ignored the fact that he heavily implied that he has used the word multiple times before, so who is to say he hasn't used this in worse context? This is plenty of justification for people to be upset and there's not any debating this either. If you know someone has said racist things multiple times before, it's only kinda logical to be skeptical of them as a character. If once, just once, I say something demeaning of women and say "oops I forgot I'm in public" it is 100% reasonable for someone to question my character in the matter. Hell, it's outright logical to come to that conclusion. You're still ignoring the fact that he somehow defaulted to that word of all words, which implies it is ingrained in his vocabulary, and he doesn't give a damn how people who were literally affected by that word and treated sub-human by that word alone feel about it, which is indeed stupid. I don't see how you could even argue how that is remotelty logical

Why do you assume I, or anyone else, is any more upset than you? I've said multiple times now how I'm only here defending those upset, because I'm neutral on the issue. I didn't sense any malice in his portrayal of the word, but as I am not him I cannot make a definitive conclusion on how he meant it, just as you cannot no matter how much you want to be him. You seem to be making a lot of assumptions here while also being unable to make basic conclusions and assumptions. You should work on that.

The sole insult I've used was "not that bright" because you do not come across as bright based on your inability to make basic conclusions, and the wild assumptions you are drawing. Neither of those are characteristic of being smart. If you had a point other than saying "who cares" and actually made an intellectual stance, I would have no reason to use that. But half of your argument is "I don't care (even though I have not a single idea how it affects those it actually targets)" and brushing off my points without actually confronting the question at hand.

Not once did I say it was a "big deal." I'm solely confronting the poor logic I've been seeing in this thread from you and a handful of others. For the fourth time in this post alone, I'm not "mad bro," I honestly don't care. This guy isn't going to magically pop up in my life so this doesn't affect me personally, but I'm not ignorant enough to say that no one could or should care at all. But again, this is all probably wasted breath on someone like you. You dodge half of my points, you make excuses or flat out say "who cares" when I have thoroughly explained why people have reason to care, you assume this word is just like any other word when I have explained why it isn't and you can check hundreds of other sources online (including your high school) explaining why it does matter, and you assume from your position of privilege everyone else knows the feeling and everyone is treated the same when that is not at all true. I'm done here until you actually attempt to come to this topic from a position of sense and understanding.

I mocked it because it was a stupid analogy.

I just got home and I'm tired so I'll make this my last post too. Like you said yourself, this doesn't affect you personally. And like you, it doesn't affect most people. Its some guy who neither of us know and will never meet, saying a dumb word to a dude out of frustration in a video game, then later apologizing. If someone wants to get upset about that, that's stupid and a waste of time. I actually like to think I'm a pretty empathetic guy, but this Pewdiepie situation is one of the dumbest things I've seen people mad about. If you were mad and I was your friend, I'd tell you the same thing. No point in getting upset about it, that's just stupid.

If I've ignored any of your points, that's either because it wasn't relevant or because I had the same response for it. Words are just words and context and intent are important. If you wanna get offended at a word itself, well I think that's stupid, but that is your business. And as far as the Pewdiepie situation, he clearly didn't mean to say n******, anyone who watched the video can tell that. If you disagree, that's fine, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt based on what I've seen.

Hell, to be honest, if he did say it in a vile, nasty way like "I hate n******s" or something like that, I'd still say it was stupid to get upset over it. Its some dude online who we don't know, really, who cares? If the "who cares" thing doesn't do it for ya, I don't know what to tell you because I think caring about what strangers online say is stupid and an overreaction from the get go.

It sucks that people still face genuine racism and there are genuine race related issues, but getting upset at this Pewdiepie situation and the word n*****, regardless of context, is so pointless in the grand scheme of things. That's my opinion and it probably won't change because people saying s*** to each other is pretty much a non issue in general if you ask me, especially when there are other real issues.

Your insults and jabs don't do anything to prove your point, that's just kinda childish and unnecessary. At the end of the day, if I have offended you or something, I do apologize, we're all just strangers online talking about other strangers online and its not that serious. No hard feelings, bud.

^that word count is too high for your weak argument of "it's just a word" and "who cares." and at this point the discussion is less about the pew dumbass and more about general use of the word. if u think people using 'er isn't a racial issue given the history of this county and that word in particular, then it probably would be best if you didn't further talk about this and further put your ignorance on display with your indifferent attitude tbh

^that word count is too high for your weak argument of "it's just a word"

What does the word count have to do anything with it? And it is just a word. There are genuine race related issues, so people getting upset over the Pewdiepie situation, as if its a big issue, is laughable.

Same with the word n*****. If someone called someone you knew a n***** with clear racist intent, I would say yeah that's f***ed up, you're justified in being upset. But someone you don't know saying it to someone you don't know, without racist intent? Words are neutral. Intent and context are important. Yes, he meant it as an insult, but he clearly didn't mean it to be racist. He wouldn't have apologized after if he did. There's no way to tell if the guy he said it to was even black.

      and "who cares."

Its a dude online saying a word to another dude online, probably in a different country than you, then apologizing after, clearly not intending to offend black people. If you do care, you have to much free time on your hands and need to rethink your priorities. So yes, I would say "who cares".

and at this point the discussion is less about the pew dumbass and more about general use of the word. if u think people using 'er isn't a racial issue

A word is hardly a real issue, especially when there are other big issues and especially when in a context like how Pewdiepie said it, when it wasn't racist or at least wasn't trying to be. And I'm assuming you mean "country", but Pewdiepie doesn't even live in America afaik.
